Al has been in the cabinet building business for over 38 years.
Al has been married to his wife Deb and they have three adult sons who are also married and who have provided them both with 6 grandsons. Some Saturdays you may even find grandpa in the shop working on projects with those young apprentice carpenters.
If you ask Al, he’ll tell you he enjoyed woodworking already in high school. Back then he had a chance to do a co-op program through West Ottawa High School with Van Pelt Cabinets. They mainly produced dental equipment cabinetry and office cabinets for dental offices all over West Michigan. After high school, Al went to work for Broward Marine in Saugatuck building cabinets for luxury yachts that were shipped all over the United States and some even outside of the US. In 1986 while working for Broward Marine Al had a chance to purchase Van Pelt cabinets from his old employer. A few years after purchasing Van Pelt he started Lakeshore Cabinets to tap into the residential housing market. In 2014 Al sold Lakeshore Cabinets to SW Builders, which is now run under the new name of Lakeshore Custom Cabinets which is still in the original location of Van Pelt cabinets where it all originally started.
If you’re looking for Al in the Summer, check the golf course….any course, he doesn’t care which one. Al and Deb also enjoy camping with family and friends during the Summer too. Another thing Al really enjoys is volunteering. Al has done Kid’s Hope in the past, enjoys going on “working mission trips” with his church, and he also enjoys volunteering his time around the church facility. If someone needs help, or a hand in the community you can always find Al first in line to help someone.
