Do you feel as though your home stays fairly tidy, but lacks systems to keep it running smoothly? We once heard that for your home to operate smoothly, you need systems in place that keep things orderly, systematized, and achievable. Just like a business with objectives to be met each month, similarly, operating our homes in such a way will not only benefit our home in general, but it will also reduce mental load, decision fatigue, and allow our home to feel manageable again.
In this blog, we would like to provide a few simple systems that have changed the game for our homes as we work on creating an ideal home atmosphere.
System #1- Donation and To-Go Bin
Do you feel as though piles accumulate around your home for various reasons but never get to a specific spot? Consider implementing a donation and to-go bin system.
Donation Bin– A box or basket in a set location in the garage or mudroom area that collects items that need to go to donation. This ensures items accumulate in one location and there is a visual reminder when it’s time to drop off.
To-Go Bin– A basket or bin near the exit of the home that collects items that need to go out. Think returns, items to family members, mail, packages, etc.
Creating temporary “homes” for these items allows them to not accumulate around the home, to be forgotten, or add to visual clutter.
System #2- Cleaning Schedule
Our homes work best when cleaning and organization are prioritized. When cleaning is scheduled, it ensures it gets done, at an appropriate time, with minimal guess work and thinking.
Cleaning schedules can be as minimal or as detailed as you desire, but it takes some work to determine what works best for you. We suggest writing out all of your major tasks and categorizing them by daily, weekly, monthly, and by which day makes sense to complete them. From there, create a schedule to stick to loosely for a month and tweak as necessary. After a month of implementation, you should have a decent idea of what works and what needs changing as you optimize your cleaning system.
System #3- Open / Close the Home
Our final system to implement in your home is crucial to have a home that stays clean, manageable, and peaceful. Open / Close the Home is essentially having a set routine you complete in the morning and the evening that sets your home up for success each day. Some of the areas this could include are:
- Dishes put away
- Floors / counters wiped and clean
- Closets shut,
- Surfaces clear
This system is highly customizable to you and your family. We have found that this gives an opportunity for the home to be reset and ready, which allows both mornings and evenings to be a springboard into what is important and not simply playing catch-up.
We hope this gives you some practical tips you can daily start to implement in your home that create real change. Interested in a new change in your custom cabinetry needs? Fill out our Contact form here or give us a ring at 616-399-3119 today!
